MARATHON HISTORY
  • Born in Marathon of Greece in 490 B.C. by the heroic effort of the soldier Pheidippides who ran this distance to announce to the Athenians the victory of the Greeks, falling dead due to the overexertion. Today in every corner of the world thousands of marathons are being conducted, making thus this sport the one with the most participants in the world and the word Marathon, the only common one among all spoken dialects worldwide. The International Thessaloniki Marathon “ALEXANDER THE GREAT”, refers to the route Pella -Thessaloniki. Pella is the ancient capital of Macedonia and the birthplace of the Great Commander, whereas Thessaloniki is the modern capital of Macedonia. This International Marathon which symbolizes one of the most recognizable personalities of humanity, Alexander the Great, is not just a major and International sporting event. It is a path in history, a path in ancient Greek culture, a Path full of Greece.

  • The 1st International Marathon “ALEXANDER THE GREAT” was held on the 16th of April in 2006, and was the result of a vision of many people who represent athletic and cultural institutions all over Greece. MEAS TRITON of Thessaloniki, licensed by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and under the auspices of SEGAS, HOC, the Hellenic National Commission for UNESCO, and with the cooperation of 52 bodies, institutional supporters, organizes the top sports event of Northern Greece. This event is of social, cultural, environmental, tourist and above all historical significance and it is the perfect representative of our city, of our Macedonia and our country, worldwide. Additionally, the International Thessaloniki Marathon is member of the International Marathons Association (AIMS) and it is included in the official annual calendar. As a consequence, no other marathon in the world is allowed to use the name of Alexander the Great.

  • The International Thessaloniki Marathon route is of low difficulty. Its main characteristics are the small altitude fluctuations and the long straight street that make it ideal for great records. Some other characteristic features are its constant east direction, the long straight street and the limited inhabited areas which it crosses until almost the 30th kilometer. The race starts from Pella, in front of the statue of Alexander the Great on horseback, hardly a km from the homonym archaeological site, and some 43 meters above sea-level.

    Detailed Route

  • After the 1st km of downhill road, the athletes get onto the Thessaloniki-Edessa highway, following it for another 8 km, until they reach Chalkidona. 

  • 8th km the athletes enter the city of Chalkidona.
  • 9th km they meet the junction to Veroia and Thessaloniki.
  • 10th km is right after Chalkidona.
  • 13th km the road passes through a bridge over Axios River.
  • 15th km is before the village Gefyra.
  • 20th km is right after the exit for Agios Athanasios at the national highway.
  • 25th km after the crossroad of Nea Agchialos.
  • 28th km passes over Gallikos River.
  • 30th km the athletes pass by Ionia (Diavata)
  • 35th km is in the center of Kordelio, in Monastiriou Street.
  • 38th km the athletes turn right in Giannitson Street.
  • 39th km the runners turn right in Dafnis Street and then left in Kountouriotou Avenue.
  • 40th km is at the Courts of Thessaloniki.
  • 41st km and 42nd km run Nikis Avenue.

  • Finish Point: The finish point is at Thessaloniki Coastal Road – Megalou Alexandrou Avenue (Alexander The Great Statue).

    5 KM MARATHON RACE – OVERVIEW
  • Starting Time: 12:30
     
  • Start Point: Thessaloniki City Hall.
  • Finish Point: Thessaloniki coastal road – Megalou Alexandrou Avenue (Alexander the Great Statue).
     
  • Briefly The Route: The race starts at the City Hall of Thessaloniki. The 5.000m. route follows the roads: Vasileos Georgiou Avenue, Andronikou, Tsimiski, Politechniou, Karatasou, Kountouriotou Avenue, Nikis Avenue, where the participants finish at Thessaloniki coastal road – Megalou Alexandrou Avenue (Alexander the Great Statue).

    10 KM MARATHON RACE – OVERVIEW
  • Starting Time: 08:45
     
  • Start Point: The race starts from the Municipal stadium of Ampelokipi, 28th October str, (with direction to Megalou Alexandrou Street).
  • Finish Point: The race finishes at the White Tower, at Thessaloniki Beach (Nikis Avenue Street).
     
  • Briefly The Route: Once they cross Megalou Alexandrou Street they reverse left and continue in 28th Octovriou street in the opposite traffic lane. The runners are directed to Dendropotamou street in which they enter (right) heading to Karaoli Dimitriou street. As soon as they cross Karaoli Dimitriou street they reverse left and continue again in Dendropotamou street in the opposite traffic lane. The runners cross vertically El. Venizelou street, they are directed right to Thoma Hatzikou street and finally they enter a small road, Agamemnonos street. At the end of this road the runners enter Monastiriou Street (left) heading to the city centre of Thessaloniki. From now on, they follow the Marathon route from the 37th km and finish at Thessaloniki coastal road – Megalou Alexandrou Avenue (Alexander the Great Statue), where all races finish.
